The quick answer
A smart fob is a physical key used with a supported keyless system. A digital car key is a compatible phone or watch credential. An app with remote controls is not automatically a digital starting key.
Identify which kind of access you use
A conventional key may use a blade for access or starting. A remote adds buttons. A smart fob can support proximity-based access or starting on an equipped vehicle. These categories can overlap, so describe the functions instead of relying on a label.
A digital car key uses a supported mobile device as an authorised key. Remote app controls can be another feature entirely. A button that unlocks the doors in an app does not prove that the phone can authorise driving.
Check both vehicle and phone compatibility
Apple says its car-key features depend on the supported car and device. BMW likewise provides model, country and device compatibility information. Check the exact vehicle equipment and current manufacturer instructions before relying on a phone as a key.
Do not assume a newer phone, a luxury badge or a successful app download adds the necessary vehicle hardware. If buying a used car, ask the manufacturer how owner access and existing shared keys should be reviewed during handover.
- Vehicle model, year and fitted equipment
- Supported phone or watch and software
- Required owner account and activation steps
- Available access, starting and sharing functions
Plan everyday use and backup access
Consider who drives the car, who needs a spare and what happens when a device is unavailable. Read the instructions for permitted sharing and for removing access when it is no longer needed.
Some supported systems have a limited power-reserve feature; do not treat that as a promise for every phone or situation. Learn your vehicle’s approved backup method before you need it. Keep any physical backup in a secure, separately accessible place.
Describe the right problem when arranging help
Tell us whether a physical fob is lost or damaged, whether the vehicle rejects a key, or whether only an app or digital credential has stopped working. These do not necessarily require the same service.
For a manufacturer account, digital-key activation or phone compatibility issue, use that manufacturer’s support route. For a physical replacement or spare-key enquiry, send us the vehicle details and postcode so we can confirm what is supported. Changing the key style does not automatically add features the car never had.
Common questions
Are smart keys better than traditional keys?
They offer different convenience and backup arrangements. The useful choice is the supported system fitted to your vehicle, with a clear plan for everyday use and a spare.
Does every keyless car support a digital phone key?
No. Confirm the exact vehicle equipment, device and regional availability with the manufacturer.
Can I replace a lost fob by downloading an app?
Do not assume so. Digital-key setup has compatibility and authorisation requirements and may require access or keys you already hold.
Can a smart-key replacement add remote start?
Not by itself. Remote start is a separate vehicle feature that needs its own compatibility check.
