The quick answer
Programming prepares supported key electronics for the vehicle. Cutting a blade, pairing remote buttons and enabling starting are different requirements, so ask which are included for your key.
Separate the blade, remote and starting functions
Tell us whether your key has a blade, remote buttons or keyless starting. Also say what the proposed replacement needs to do. A blade that turns a lock does not by itself demonstrate that the electronic key will start the vehicle.
The required preparation varies by design. A purely mechanical key and a coded electronic key are different jobs. Ford’s replacement-key guidance, for example, describes ignition keys programmed for an individual vehicle.
- Is a blade required, and will it be cut?
- Which remote buttons must work?
- Does the car use keyless starting?
- Are you adding a spare or replacing every missing key?
Check the vehicle and the new key together
Give the registration, model, year and information about all available keys. If you bought a key separately, share the listing and any part details before booking. A programmer cannot make every incompatible product suitable.
Support is specific to the vehicle and key. An auto locksmith may provide programming for some systems but not every model, year or condition. Ask for confirmation instead of treating “all makes” as a promise that every possible key can be supplied immediately.
Use only the procedure for your exact vehicle
Some manufacturers document an owner procedure for particular vehicles. Others require a workshop route. One Ford handbook example requires two already programmed keys; this is a condition of that specific procedure, not a rule for all cars.
Do not copy an ignition or button sequence from a different model. Remote synchronisation and adding an immobiliser key may be different operations. If your handbook does not provide an applicable procedure, arrange an assessment rather than experimenting with software or resets.
Agree the job and check the result
Ask what the total covers, which keys need to attend and what proof of ownership is required. Explain if no working key remains, or if the vehicle already has a starting fault. These details affect the proposed work.
At completion, ask to check each agreed function and the existing keys that should remain usable. Keep the invoice. If a button works but the vehicle does not start, report those separate observations instead of assuming the whole job succeeded or failed.
Common questions
Can a locksmith programme my new car fob?
Often, but support must be confirmed for the vehicle, year and exact fob. Check before buying a key or arranging the visit.
Can I programme a replacement car key myself?
Only use an owner procedure that applies to your exact vehicle and circumstances. Do not assume a sequence for another model or a remote-only function will add a starting key.
Can older models use a new remote?
Age alone does not establish compatibility. The remote, vehicle equipment and required preparation must be checked together.
Do mobile locksmiths work with electronic and keyless keys?
We welcome electronic-key and keyless enquiries. Send the vehicle details so we can confirm support and the appropriate service.
