CHOOSING A REPLACEMENT KEY

Aftermarket or original car key? Compare the complete option

Two fobs can look alike and still be different products. Compare what will work with your car, who will prepare it and what happens if there is a problem.

The quick answer

Choose a key that is confirmed for your exact vehicle and supplied with the functions and support you need. An original or aftermarket label alone does not establish compatibility or reliability.

Understand what you are being offered

Ask whether the quote is for a genuine manufacturer-branded key, another manufacturer’s compatible key, or a repair using your existing electronics. A replacement outer shell is not the same purchase as a complete electronic key.

Have the supplier identify the proposed option in writing. Terms such as “OEM quality” do not, on their own, explain who made it or what is included. If retaining the original appearance matters to you, discuss that before agreeing the work.

Confirm compatibility before comparing prices

Provide the registration, model, year and the functions of your current key. HELLA’s technical guidance identifies the transmitter design, identification number and frequency as important matching details. Appearance alone is not a reliable selection method.

Ask for confirmation that the proposed key supports the functions you use. A quotation should distinguish a basic spare from an option with remote buttons or keyless operation. Do not buy a similar-looking fob first and assume any locksmith can programme it afterwards.

  • Starting and immobiliser recognition
  • Remote locking and unlocking
  • Keyless access, if fitted and supported
  • The appropriate blade or emergency key

Compare the total service and aftercare

Compare like-for-like totals: the key itself, cutting, programming, attendance and testing. Ask about warranty terms, who handles a fault and whether any exclusions apply to a customer-supplied key.

We do not publish a league table of key brands or promise that every aftermarket option outlasts, or fails sooner than, an original. Ask about the specific product proposed for your vehicle rather than relying on a general reliability claim.

Choose with your vehicle and priorities in mind

An original key may suit a preference for manufacturer branding and the dealer’s supply route. A compatible alternative may be worth considering when its functions, total price and support meet your needs. Confirm availability for either option.

Send us your vehicle details and say whether you need an everyday replacement or a spare. We can discuss supported choices and the work involved. Before completion, check the agreed key functions with the vehicle and retain the invoice and product information.

Common questions

Are aftermarket car key fobs reliable?

The answer depends on the particular key, its suitability and the completed work. Ask for a confirmed compatible option, clear support terms and a functional test rather than accepting a blanket claim about all aftermarket fobs.

Which spare-key brand lasts the longest?

We do not have comparative lifetime testing that supports a universal ranking. Identify the exact product, warranty and intended use before choosing.

Does a luxury badge mean a key is more dependable?

A vehicle badge is not a reliability test. Confirm the supported key system and functions for the model and year.

Can I supply a fob bought online?

Ask us to assess the listing before buying. A shell, used fob or incorrect electronic specification may not be suitable for the work you need.
